Research: SafeRiderAdvanced Telematics for enhancing the safety and comfort of motorcycle ridersOverviewThis is a 3 year project funded under the EU FP7 Program consisting of 20 partners from the EU. Start date: December 2007 ObjectivesEuropean statistics show that Powered-Two-Wheelers (PTW) road accidents are extremely high. Moreover, compared to a passenger car occupant, a motorcycle rider is 26 times more likely to die in a crash. During the last decade, ADVANCED DRIVER ASSISTANCE SYSTEMS (ADAS) and IN-VEHICLE INFORMATION SYSTEMS (IVIS) development is one of the main research areas of the automotive industry. However, the application of such technologies in motorcycles and even clean motorbikes (electric) is currently lacking behind and should be undoubtedly studied further. Therefore the aim of SAFERIDER is to study the potential of ADAS/IVIS integration on motorcycles for rider comfort and safety. Our roleMIRA is project managing two work packages. The ADAS applications where we are developing the Speed Alert function and all the Application Integration, where we will be running 2 motorcycles around our track and having testers give there opinions on the functions we manage to integrate! From this the consortium will be able to estimate the safety impact and user acceptance of the concepts and develop design guidelines for manufacturers.
