Research: SafeInteriorsTrain interior passive safety for EuropeOverviewThis is a 4 year project funded under the EU FP6 Program consisting of 16 partners from the EU. Start date: July 2006 ObjectivesThis new interior passive safety platform will provide tangible and commercially viable solutions with a systems approach to methodically reduce injuries and fatalities in rail vehicle accidents. The investigation of primary and secondary collision events, together with research into injury mechanisms and biomechanics, and development of rail specific injury criteria and measuring devices, will reduce the incidence of injuries sustained in railway vehicles in a cost effective and optimized manner. Our roleMIRA is joint Work Package leader of WP3 “Rail injury criteria, measuring and testing”. This activity identifies key occupant postures and injury criteria for rail transportation and develops appropriate measuring devices and methodologies to provide the means to assess these. These test devices and methodologies will be evaluated and validated, and where possible complimented with CAE models, to provide a set of robust and reliable tools for the designer to be able to develop and engineer occupant friendly interiors.
