MIRA Welcomes Government Investment in Low Carbon |
|
Today Business Secretary Peter Mandelson and Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon launched the Government's vision to promote ultra low carbon transport over the next five years. The Government plans to invest £250m to support the purchase of electric and plug-in hybrid cars.The long awaited announcement has been welcomed by MIRA which has a long history of developing both electric and hybrid vehicles.

Technology Providers to Lead Low Carbon Initiative |
|
Leadership roles at Low Carbon NGO’s are being filled by senior figures drawn from prominent technology providers. Yesterday’s appointment of Professor Neville Jackson from Ricardo to run the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership was the second key appointment of the quarter, following John Wood’s move to step down as MIRA’s MD in January to Chair the Technology Strategy Board’s Advisory Panel for the Low Carbon Vehicle Integrated Delivery Platform. Together these moves ensure that technology providers are now in pole position to drive the low carbon agenda. |

MIRA - World First for Def Stan 61-5 Accreditation |
|
MIRA’s decisive response to the recent update to Defence Standard 61-5 has led to the company being the first in the world accredited to perform vital certification work. Swift action secured approval from UKAS to extend MIRA’s accreditation, following the move to publish the new Def Stan in mid-February. Def Stan 61-5 encompasses all new and existing vehicles destined for current operational theatres, so the impact will be felt throughout the sector, but most importantly on the battlefield. |

Primary Advisors on New Defence Standard 61-5 |

The MOD has renewed its focus on the electrical systems in frontline vehicles by updating Defence Standard 61-5 part 6 issue 6, with MIRA serving as primary advisors. The new Def Stan has been developed to ensure military vehicles posses a powerful yet robust electrical system that operates reliably in the arduous conditions faced by frontline troops. The previous issue was released in 1990. The march of technology demanded a root and branch revision of the legacy document. |

This year MIRA's safety engineers were confirmed as the "Crash Test Team of the Year". Despite this accolade, MIRA always seek to reduce the number of physical tests required to the minimum number necessary to prove the design meets it's legislative requirements and acceptance targets . So MIRA 'crash test' more virtual designs than actual prototypes. |
