Markets : Rail

Modern rail vehicles present unique engineering challenges due, in part, to their size, speed and requirement to provide a safe passenger environment usually without employing restraint systems.  Other challenges such as providing a comfortable carriage with convenient features that can withstand the demands and abuses of continuous use push the engineering team to produce innovative solutions.

MIRA provides engineering consultancy in many key areas of rail vehicle and trackside equipment design such as:

  • Vehicle aerodynamics
  • Aerodynamic interactions e.g. vehicles passing, vehicles entering tunnels and platform and trackside safety
  • Crash safety
  • Fire propagation
  • Seat design
  • Carriage comfort i.e. nvh and thermal comfort
  • Durability
  • Structural integrity

A variety of techniques are available to MIRA's engineers including the most current Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) tools and an unparalleled suite of development facilities and laboratories.

CAE simulation to study the effects of a rail vehicle hitting a
truck on a level crossing.

MIRA's aerodynamicists use a combination of wind tunnel
testing and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to develop
the aerodynamic performance of rail vehicles.
